In Levantine Arabic (Shami), direct and indirect object pronouns attach directly to the ends of verbs, active participles, and pseudo-verbs. While direct object suffixes closely resemble those in Modern Standard Arabic (FuSHa), Shami introduces a distinct indirect object system using لـ (-l-) suffixes and the double-object carrier ياـ (yaa-).
In this lesson, we will cover direct object suffixes, vowel-shifting rules, indirect -l- suffixes, long vowel shortening, and how to manage double object pronouns.
Direct object suffixes attach directly to verbs or active participles. Their forms vary slightly depending on whether the word ends in a consonant or a vowel:
| Person | Pronoun | After Consonant | After Vowel | Regional Variants |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Me | ana | ـني (-ni) | ـني (-ni) | Universal |
| You (m.) | inte | ـك (-ak) | ـك (-k) | Universal |
| You (f.) | inti | ـك (-ek) | ـكي (-ki) | Universal |
| Him / It | huwwe | ـو (-o) | ـه (-h / long vowel) | Universal |
| Her / It | hiyye | ـها / ـا (-ha / -a) | ـها / ـa (-ha / -a) | Syr/Leb often drop h (-a) |
| Us | ni7na / i7na | ـنا (-na) | ـنا (-na) | Universal |
| You (pl.) | intu | ـكن (-kon) | ـكم (-kum) | Syr/Leb: -kon / Jor/Pal: -kum |
| Them | hinnen / hum | ـهن (-hon) | ـهم (-hom) | Syr/Leb: -hon / Jor/Pal: -hom |
Unlike FuSHa, Levantine Arabic features an integrated set of indirect object suffixes built with لـ (-l-) (’to / for’). These attach directly to the verb stem:
| Person | Pronoun | Short Suffix (After Vowel/Single C) | Full Suffix (After Consonant Cluster) |
|---|---|---|---|
| To/For me | ana | ـلي (-li) | ـإلي (-élli) |
| To/For you (m.) | inte | ـلك (-lak) | ـإلك (-éllak) |
| To/For you (f.) | inti | ـلك (-lek) | ـإلك (-éllek) |
| To/For him | huwwe | ـلو (-lo) | ـإلو (-éllo) |
| To/For her | hiyye | ـلها / ـلا (-élha / -élla) | ـإلها / ـإلا (-élha / -élla) |
| To/For us | ni7na | ـلنا (-élna) | ـإلنا (-élna) |
| To/For you (pl.) | intu | ـلكن / ـلكم (-élkon / -ilkom) | ـإلكن / ـإلكم (-élkon / -ilkom) |
| To/For them | hinnen | ـلهن / ـلهم (-éllon / -ilhom) | ـإلهن / ـإلهم (-éllon / -ilhom) |
When attaching -l- suffixes to hollow verbs (single long middle vowel), long vowels ii and uu shorten to é:
A single verb in Levantine Arabic cannot hold two direct pronoun suffixes simultaneously. When a sentence requires both a direct and an indirect object pronoun, the direct object is placed on the pronoun carrier ياـ (yaa-):
Adding an -l- indirect suffix forces the direct object onto ياـ (yaa-):
Pseudo-verbs that already take attached pronouns for their subject (such as بدي / bédd-) use ياـ (yaa-) to carry their direct object:
In Part #14, we will cover Possession and iDaafe.
